1)      The case highlights differences in adoption of open source ERP systems between small or medium and large companies. What are the main reasons behind these differences? Do you think it is only a matter of cost? Justify your answer.

Adoption of open source ERP systems in small and medium organizations is much easier than in big organizations. The reasons behind this may be:

·         Small organizations are flexible than large organizations, in terms of size and performance.

·         Small organizations can focus on the system changes and adjust as per that, whereas in large organizations it’s very tough to manage a change.

·         Training can be more effective among small mass than in bunch of people.

It is not just the matter of cost because if so large organizations are much better off than small and medium organizations in terms of money. Overall it’s the management process which makes the difference.

2)      Enterprise resource planning systems are clearly the backbone of the modern enterprise. How comfortable would you feel about recommending the adoption of an open source package to perform these functions, and why? What kinds of resistance, if any would you expect to find about?

ERP changes the whole business pattern and people resist changing. Also effective planning and implementation is necessary to convert such big changes effective. So there could be some resistance but if efficiently executed with proper preparations ERP can result a grand success of an organization.

3)      Do you agree with the rationale stated by some of the CIOs in the case that if ERP systems need to be customized anyway, starting with an open source package may make more sense than with a commercial one? Why or why not? Justify your answer.

Open source package are much flexible and interactive. Such packages are easy to integrate with other application programs of business users. These are also easy to make minor modifications to suit an organization’s business process. So if open source package is used than organization can redesign it and mould it into organization’s working pattern which helps in understanding the software more easily and making the best out of it. So I think if it has to be customized later on, because of different patterns of performance of different organizations it is much easier to go for open software package rather that web enabled and specific e- business suites.
